Six Egyptians were killed and another 16 injured in a pile-up on a bridge in southern Cairo, security sources have reported.
The crash happened on el-Moneeb Bridge in southern Cairo when the driver of a trailer carrying building materials lost control of his vehicle because he was speeding, a security official told Al-Masry Al-Youm. The truck then overturned, hitting eight cars, which were hit again by another truck coming from behind.
The source said the bodies of the victims and the injured have been transported to hospital, and security forces have removed the wreckage from the road.
Egypt has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world, which is largely attributed to reckless driving, the bad condition of the roads and vehicles, drivers’ disregard for traffic regulations, and driving under the influence of drugs.
Road accidents are the second most common cause of death in Egypt. Eight thousand people are killed every year in road accidents.
