President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi arrived in Cairo on Wednesday evening from the Uzbek capital Tashkent, after the end of a foreign tour which included Bahrain, China and Uzbekistan.
Sisi and Uzbek President Shavkat Miriyev reportedly discussed security and military cooperation to combat terrorism, and cooperation in “several” unspecified other fields.
The Egyptian president thanked both Miriyev and his accompanying Egyptian delegation in a speech in Tashkent.
He voiced his hope that “this visit will be the beginning of stronger political ties between Egypt and Uzbekistan”.
Prior to the president’s visit to Beijing for 2018’s China-African Cooperation Forum, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority announced that Sisi would sign three contracts with major Chinese companies specializing in spinning, weaving, and raw materials at investments equal to US$1 billion, for the Suez Canal Economic Zone in Ain Sokhna.
On the sidelines of the forum, Sisi also held high-level talks with a number of African officials, to discuss such topics as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the conflict in South Sudan.
