President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received, on Thursday evening, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives and her accompanying delegation, at the UNCOP27 Climate Summit.
The official spokesperson for the Presidency, Bassam Rady, stated that the meeting witnessed a one-on-one session with Pelosi, which was followed by further more in depth talks that included her accompanying delegation.
The visit was welcomed and the decades-old relations between Egypt and the US was to ge celebrated according to Sisi.
Egypt’s keenness to strengthen these relations in all aspects, in a framework of mutual respect and common interests.
Especially in light of the turbulent regional escalating challenges, the threats of terrorism, as well as the negative repercussions of coronavirus and the Russian-Ukrainian war on the economy, energy and food security.
Sisi also affirmed his keenness to communicate with the leaders of Congress, within the framework of coordination and consultation between the two friendly countries.
He wants to discuss various issues of common interest to have reviewed the efforts made by Egypt in the field of combating terrorism and extremist ideology.
Pelosi congratulated President Sisi on the distinguished organization of the COP27 by Egypt.
Praising the depth of joint cooperation between the two friendly countries, and stressing the great importance the US attaches to relations to Egypt.
Taking into account that Egypt is a pillar of security and stability in the Middle East and the Arab world, as well as being a pivotal partner for the US in the region.
Pelosi expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s successful and effective role in combating terrorism and extremist ideology, reforming religious discourse, and establishing the noble concepts and values of freedom of belief, tolerance and acceptance of the other, in addition to the great efforts to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development in Egypt.
Pelosi added that the meeting witnessed an open dialogue between Sisi and members of the US delegation, where the members of the delegation were keen to listen to the president’s assessments on various regional and international issues, especially the efforts to combat terrorism over the past years in Egypt.
Also the developments of various existing issues in the region, most prominently the ongoing crisis in Libya, Yemen and Syria.
Pelosi praised Egypt’s unremitting efforts to reach political settlements for these issues.
While Sisi stressed that the solution to these pressing issues revolved around ending foreign interference and eliminating armed militias and extremist groups.
In parallel to supporting the concept of the state, its institutions, central governments and national armies.
Response to the inquiries of some members of the delegation, Sisi explained Egypt’s firm situation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the need to reach a binding legal agreement on filling and operating the dam, to achieve the interests of all parties and preserve Egyptian water security.
The meeting also addressed developments of the Palestinian cause.
The US House Speaker praised Egyptian efforts in support of the peace process and to maintain calm between the two sides, while Sisi affirmed Egypt’s position in this regard by reaching a just and comprehensive solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with international references.
Pospects for peaceful coexistence and cooperation among all the peoples of the region.
They also discussed ways to enhance Egypt-US bilateral relations in a number of fields, especially at the political, military and economic fields. Sisi reviewed the efforts made by the Egyptian government to advance development and structural modernization of the infrastructure, as well as the internal steps taken for comprehensive economic reform and sustainable development.
