Sisi meets Abbas, Netanyahu to resume peace process in the Middle East

Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, met with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas on Monday to discuss ways in which to resume the peace process, along with the latest developments of peace talks between Palestine and Israel. These talks come in light of Egyptian efforts to reach Palestinian reconciliation between the Fatah and Hamas movements.

Sisi also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his residence in New York, on the sidelines of his visit to the United States. During the meeting Sisi stressed that the Egyptian government sought to resume negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, with the aim of reaching a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, in accordance with the two-state solution, presidency spokesman Alaa Youssef said in a statement.

Egypt’s president praised the mediation efforts of US President Donald Trump’s administration, pointing out contributions not only in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict but across the Middle East, working towards stability, security and development within the region.

The president also stressed that achieving a just and comprehensive peace solution for the Middle East, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, alongside the State of Israel, would support stability in the region and eliminate the most important pretexts used by terrorist organizations to promote their ideology.

On the crisis with Qatar, Sisi said that it was time to effectively confront the parties supporting terrorism and hold them accountable. He added that Qatar must show its desire to not harm the interests of Arab countries and non-interference in its internal affairs by responding to the demands of the four Arab countries.

During his meeting with UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed, the president said that the current challenges necessitated unifying all Arab efforts to counter attempts to interfere in the affairs of Arab countries and destabilize them.

For his part, Bin Zayed praised the level of coordination and intensive consultation with Egypt to address the challenges and risks facing the region, especially terrorism. He pointed out the importance of Arab solidarity against threat attempts to the security and stability of the Arab peoples.
