A member of Tamarod was killed early Monday, just hours before the presidential elections kicked off.
The group’s official website said that Mohamed Fathy, who is also a senior member in Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's campaign, was shot dead near his house in Nahia, Giza.
“Fathy was assassinated while requesting authorizations from campaign members and Sisi representatives," said Mohamed Hassan, Tamarod’s coordinator in Giza. "His body is now at Cairo's Zeinhom morgue."
Mohamed Nabawy, Tamarod’s media representative, told CBC TV that what happened will not make them lose momentum.
Giza Security Chief Kamal al-Daly told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Fathy was getting a ride from a friend before he was shot dead.
"The incident is currently under investigation," Daly added.
Tamarod was the grassroots campaign that led the 2013 protests against former president Mohamed Morsy and prompted Sisi to oust him in July.
