The Shura Council, Egypt's upper house and currently the sole legislative body in the country, approved on Sunday the Supreme Constitutional Court's recommended changes, made in May, to the electoral law of the House of Representatives, the lower house of parliament.
"The council has finally approved the draft law which will be referred back to the Supreme Constitutional Court in order to verify that it conforms to its recommendations,” Shura Council speaker Ahmed Fahmy said.
The council also approved an increase in the number of House seats from 546 to 588, reflecting the allocation of additional seats to seven provinces.
President Mohamed Morsy had officially called for elections for the House of Representatives to be held in April before a Cairo Administrative Court ruling cancelled his decree.
