Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s commitment to continue defending the rights of the Palestinian people in order to establish an independent Palestinian state with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital.
He made the remarks during a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip and the flagrant human rights violations against the Palestinians.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said the UN official was keen to stand on Shoukry’s assessment of the unprecedented Israeli military escalation in the Gaza Strip and Egypt’s vision for ceasing fire and sending needed assistance to the enclave.
Shoukry asserted that there is a sense of humanitarian shock over Israel’s collective punishment policies, referring to the siege and forced evacuation.
He urged international players to shoulder their legal, humanitarian and political responsibilities to end this crisis and reach a ceasefire as soon as possible.
Shoukry also listened to the UN official’s assessment of the situation in the enclave and his plans to confront the current violations and investigating them.
Shoukry reviewed Egypt’s efforts and political communications with international and regional partners, organizations, and UN relief agencies to push for a ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian assistance into the Gaza Strip.
Türk lauded the efforts exerted by Egypt to contain the crisis as well as facilitating his mission in Egypt and giving him the chance to visit Rafah Crossing.
He stressed keenness on continued coordination with Egypt to end the current humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
