Shoft Taharosh (I Saw Harassment), a pressure group that works on monitoring and reporting sexual harassment, has suggested creating a unified public prison for those accused of violent sexual crimes against women.
Shoft Taharosh coordinator Fathy Fareed said the main goal of the establishment of such a prison would be to facilitate the rehabilitation of criminals socially and psychologically to be productive citizens in society after the end of their sentence.
Everyone loses, both society and the perpetrators, when those accused of sexual violence or harassment serve their sentences in public prisons among other criminals as they often leave prison without any type of rehabilitation, he told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
But if they were detained in a prison that resembles a reformatory institution abiding by international detention standards, it would be beneficial to them and society, Fareed argued.
The initiative, submitted to the Interior Ministry, will study the initial cost of the prison as well as perceptions of the geometric shape and design of the proposed prison, he said.
