Shipping giant CMA CGM announced on Tuesday that it intends to gradually boost the number of vessels using the Suez Canal.
“Some vessels have made the transit through the Red Sea. This decision is based on an in-depth evaluation of the security landscape and our commitment to the security and safety of our seafarers,” CMA CGM announced in a statement.
“We are currently devising plans for the gradual increase in the number of vessels transiting through the Suez Canal. We are monitoring the situation constantly and we stand ready to promptly reassess and adjust our plans as needed.”
This comes days after Maersk announced that it would resume its operations in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, attributing its decision to deploying a military force led by the US to ensure the safety of trade in the Red Sea, where ships passing through are subject to attacks from Huthi militants supported by Iran.
The Red Sea crisis is casting a shadow over global trade, with container ships already turning to sailing around Africa to avoid the region.
Huthi militants in Yemen pledged to continue targeting ships in response to the Israeli war in Gaza.
