Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker said Egypt has outlined an integrated strategy for the production of low-carbon hydrogen and to be among world leaders in its production.
Shaker made the remarks at the inauguration of the Arab Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ARFREE). The forum runs for three days and is organized through cooperation between the Arab League, the Economic and Social Commission of Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), affiliated to the Arab Ministers of Electricity Council.
Shaker said Egypt launched the national strategy for production of low-cost hydrogen during the UN Climate Summit (COP27), held in Sharm El Sheikh in November.
He made it clear that this strategy aims at upping Egypt’s quota from the international trade of hydrogen from 5 percent to eight percent, noting that cooperation is currently underway with the private sector companies as 23 memoranda of understanding have been signed with major international companies, in addition to signing 9 framework agreements with alliances to launch the production of green hydrogen.
Shaker made it clear that the development march Egypt is currently witnessing led to increase in energy consumption, noting that Egypt is dealing with the issue of energy as a matter of national security.
He highlighted Egypt’s deal with Siemens Company to produce 14 megwatts of energy through a period of two years and a half, a matter which is unprecedented in Egypt.
