Al-Haqanya Center for Law, formed by a group of young volunteer activists in 2013, demanded on Thursday cancelling the gag order issued by the top prosecutor in the killing of activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh and revealing the latest developments in investigations.
The final forensic reports have been issued and the prosecution listened to wintnesses and received the evidence submitted by Sabbagh's defense team including videos and images that clearly show the killer, the center said in a statement Thursday.
The media gag issued by the top prosecutor has increased the intransigence of the prosecution to prevent the victim's lawyers from following up the development of investigations, the statement added.
Top prosecutor Hesham Barakat issued a gag on the case on 12 February 2015.
Since intransigence and procrastination with the defense of the victim represents a clear violation of the constitution and law, as it violates the right of lawyers to know the progress of investigations and look at the evidence, Sabbagh's defense team is demanding reversing the order.
The defense team demanded an official copy of investigations in accordance with Article 84 of the Criminal Procedure Law.
The course of the investigation lacks transparency and raises suspicion around bringing killers to justice, according to the statement.
Sabbagh was killed while holding flowers during a peaceful protest in January 2015, commemorating the 25 January revolution.
