Shafiq’s campaign reveals talks with several public figures

Yasser Abul Makarem, the general coordinator of Ahmed Shafiq’s presidential campaign, said Shafiq has held several meetings with religious and political figures over the past 24 hours to form his presidential administration.

Abul Makarem told the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper that Shafiq will hold another series of important meetings with public figures and foreign media channels within hours. He said Shafiq started the meetings on Friday, and his administration will include all segments of society.

Abul Makarem expressed confidence in the Presidential Elections Commission’s decisions and in Shafiq’s victory. The campaign will not celebrate until final results are announced, he said, but Shafiq won the majority of votes.

Meanwhile, secretary of the Freedom and Justice Party in Cairo, Mohamed al-Beltagy, said “There’s a scheme that aims to make sure Ahmed Shafiq wins the runoff elections,” which will create "a peaceful revolution."

Beltagy wrote on Facebook that “after the failure of Shafiq, several parties are trying to press for re-holding elections in some governorates, so Shafiq woud win in less strained atmosphere. For this, rallies were staged on Saturday to show a balanced popular image before re-holding the runoff decision.”

The Presidential Elections Commission will announce on Sunday the results of the runoff, and both candidates have already said they won.

Shafiq is a former general and Mubarak-era prime minister.
