Seven die in Luxor traffic accident

Seven people died and 7 others were injured Saturday evening after a lorry and minibus collided on a highway south of Luxor.

The accident took place on the Aswan-Luxor desert highway close to Esna City.

All 7 bodies were transferred to the Esna Central Hospital nearby, after ambulance and police rushed to the scene, while the wounded were taken to Luxor International Hospital.

Investigators have failed to identify one of the 7 bodies, a Luxor Security Directorate statement said after preliminary investigations.

Deadly road and rail accidents across Egypt have sparked public outcry over the government’s transport safety record in recent years.

Many road crashes in Egypt are caused by reckless driving, lax traffic rgulations and dangerous road conditions.

An official report recorded a total of 1,999 accidents on main roads and highways in 2011, leading to 980 deaths and over 4,300 people being hospitalised.
