Seven dead, 10 wounded as truck crashes into 3 microbuses on Ring Road

Seven people were killed and 10 others were wounded in a car crash late Friday night when a truck collided with three microbuses on the Ring Road in the Monib, Giza area, according to the Health Ministry. The lorry and one of the vehicles fell to the ground from the flyover.

Eyewitnesses present at the scene said the victims included two kids aged seven and 12. A security source said the death toll could be as high as 16.

Giza security chief Ahmed Hegazy said the truck driver has been arrested and referred to interrogation. He told Al-Masry Al-Youm that “a human error” caused the accident, denying that it could have resulted from a structural issue with the road.

Cranes were summoned to the scene to lift the damaged vehicles from the road.

Egypt has one of the world's highest traffic-related mortality rates.

In a recent published report, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said the number of car accidents during the first half of 2015 rose by 3.5 percent with a total of 6,916 accidents, compared with 6,685 accidents during the same period in 2014. The number of deaths, however, decreased by 2.7 percent, from 3,025 to 2,808 deaths during the first half of 2015.
