The Republican Guard and military police have surrounded the residence of President-elect Mohamed Morsy in New Cairo after he was announced the first elected civilian president of Egypt.
Thousands of Morsy’s supporters celebrated with fireworks in front of his house.
Farouk Sultan, head of the Presidential Elections Commission, declared Morsy the winner in the runoff election Sunday, with 51.7 percent of the votes against his rival Ahmed Shafiq’s 48.3 percent.
