Egyptian security forces have prevented members of the lawyers syndicate branch of the National Association for Change (NAC) from organizing a march in Cairo’s al-Zawya al-Hamra district.
One of the main aims of the march was to collect signatures for a petition supporting Mohamed ElBaradei in next year’s presidential elections.
Police detained three NAC members shortly before releasing them late Wednesday. “We will hold another march on Sunday,” NAC member Tarek al-Awady told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
NAC Coordinator Asaad Heikal said he had requested permission from the Interior Ministry to hold the march. “They didn’t respond, though they allowed the pro-Gamal Mubarak campaigners to hold a conference in the same area,” he said.
“Denying us the right to march puts the police in a prejudiced position and violates the constitutional principle of equality,” he added.
