Nineteen people have been arrested in Alexandria for verbal harassment of female school students, Major General Sherif abdel Hamid, head of Alexandria Investigations Department, said on Thursday.
The arrests resulted from a raid launched by Alexandria Security Department on Wednesday on schools in west and central Alexandria. The raids were aimed at tackling sexual harassment among students, with security officials and school staff seeking to impose discipline.
Abdel Hamid warned against attempts to harm public morals and traditions, saying that security bodies will always perform their role of protecting and reassuring both students and parents.
Residents welcomed the female police personnel involved in the raids, chanting “Long live Egypt” as police went about their business. They commended the security efforts and urged more campaigns to secure schools.
