Security forces have intensified their presence in three villages east of the Nile in Beni Suef Governorate, hoping to arrest residents accused of hurling stones at the governor’s convoy after Friday prayers last week.
The governor was returning from a visit to Gheyada village in the Bebah region of Beni Suef Governorate when he saw the villagers laying a pipe on state-owned property. The governor called on the governorate’s secretary general and monitoring manager to look into the matter. When they arrived, village residents pelted the officials with stones. The officials were taken to the local public hospital.
Dr. Fayez el-Shahed, the hospital manager, said the governorate secretary general was released from hospital, while the monitoring manager was still in hospital with a splint on his left arm.
Meanwhile, security forces in Beni Suef have arrested five suspects as investigations into the incident continue.
