Secular MPs considering Shura Council walk-out

Secular MPs in the Shura Council, now Egypt's only legislative body, are considering a collective walk-out in solidarity with Tamarod campaigners ahead of 30 June protests against President Mohamed Morsy.

The group resignation is aimed at expressing solidarity with opposition and revolutionary forces behind the Tamarod campaign, which means "rebel" in Arabic.

Nagi al-Shehabi, Geel Party chief, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Shura members are considering submitting their resignations to press President Morsy to cede to 30 June demonstrators' demands.

Parliamentary sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that MPs wanted to time their announcement to support protesters, who will take to streets in coming days to demand early presidential elections.

That timing had not been identified yet, sources claimed.

Liberal MPs have been holding several meetings at the Shura Council, rejecting decisions and draft laws submitted by the government, Islamists and the presidency.

MP Nadia Henry addressed Shura Council Speaker Ahmed Fahmy last week claiming the council is now illegitimate following a recent Supreme Constitutional Court ruling.
