The second phase of the third metro line (Abbasseya-Heliopolis) became operational as of 4pm on Wednesday.
Interim President Adly Mansour inaugurated the second phase of the third line of metro, which extends from Abbasseya to Ahram stop in Heliopolis
“It will reduce traffic surface traffic by 600,000 passengers per day,” said Ismail Nagdy, head of the National Authority for Tunnels. “It includes nine stations.”
Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb and Transportation Minister Ibrahim al-Demeiry both escorted the president.
Informed source from Transportation Ministry earlier declared postponing of the second phase, that was scheduled to be opened on Monday, for security reasons.
Metro is planned to operate through four lines. One of them will reach Cairo Airport and is expected to be finished by 2019.
The metro was first opened in 1989.
