Nearly 100 non-commissioned army officers staged a sit-in blocking traffic on the ring road in Cairo to demand a salary increase, the website of state-run Al-Ahram newspaper said Wednesday.
Skirmishes occurred as military police forces attempted to disperse the protest, which blocked the artery leading to the Cairo-Suez desert road amid a total absence of police services, the website reported.
Early in June, Farid Ismail, an MP from the Freedom and Justice Party, proposed a bill that would quadruple army salaries. The People’s Assembly was dissolved later in the same month before the bill was passed.
