Egyptian schools and universities will remain closed the week starting Saturday 19 February, Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and the acting Minister of Education Hani Helal has announced.
The decision was a result of consultations with heads of universities and education departments nationwide who opted for postponement in light of recent unrest.
On 25 January, wide-scale popular protests swept through Egyptian governorates calling for the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak and demanding constitutional and political reforms. Mubarak consequently stepped down on 11 February.
The Egyptian army is now in power for a transitional period of six months, during which the constitution is being amended ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections.
