Sayed Belal’s killer given 15-year sentence

Alexandria Criminal Court sentenced Osama al-Konayyessy, former officer at the dissolved State Security Investigation Service (SSIS), to 15 years in prison and fined him LE10,000 Tuesday.

He was convicted of killing Salafi Sayed Belal, who was held pending investigations conducted by state security into the New Year bombing of the Two Saints Church in Alexandria killing more than 20 people.

Konayyessy had previously been sentenced in absentia and today marked the conclusion of his retrial.

Another officer Mohamed Abdel Rahman al-Sheemy was also given the same 15-year sentence.

Other suspects in the case Hossam Ibrahim al-Shennawy and Ahmed Mostafa Kamel were given life sentences in absentia. Mahmoud Abdel Aleem, who had requested a retrial, was cleared.

Konayyessi was earlier sentenced to life in absentia before being retried.

Investigations showed that several SSIS officers interrogated and tortured Belal at the security department, which resulted in his death.

The bombing took place weeks ahead of the eruption of the 2011 revolution against the rule of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
