Prince Talal bin Abdel Aziz al-Saud, head of the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, denied on Wednesday reports that Saudi Arabia supports deposed President Hosni Mubarak.
“Saudi Arabia only supports the good leaders,” he said, adding that Mubarak was not a wise or useful leader.
The prince, who is banned from practicing politics since he led the Free Princes Movement in 1958, which called for constitutional rule in Saudi Arabia, denied that his country had offered Egypt money in return for not prosecuting Mubarak.
During his visit to Cairo on Wednesday, al-Saud also expressed his concerns regarding the resumption of relations between Egypt and Iran. “Egypt must be careful, for Iran is unpredictable,” he said.
He also wondered why Arab leaders do not respond to people’s demands and insist on perpetuating tyranny.
