Sabbahi, Nasser’s son inaugurate Chavez statue

Hamdeen Sabbahi, founder of the Popular Current, and Abdel Hakim Abdel Nasser, son of late President Nasser, inaugurated on Tuesday a statue of late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez in the Freedom and Friendship Park on the occasion of the Venezuelan cultural week.

Attending the ceremony was Ambassador Mohamed Farid Mounib, assistant foreign minister for American affairs, the Cairo deputy governor and a number of Latin American ambassadors.

Mounib reiterated at the ceremony the positive relationship enjoyed between Egypt and Venezuela.

The park, which was opened during the reign of Khedive Ismail, spans an area of over 7.5 acres and has been developed and converted into a museum featuring statues of world leaders symbolizing friendship between nations.

It includes statues of poets Ahmed Shawky and Hafez Ibrahim, economist Talaat Harb and martyr Abdel Moneim Riad.

It also includes statues of Latin American liberation movement leaders, such as Bernardo O'Higgins of Chile, Jose Marti of Cuba, Raymond Castillo of Peru and Eloy Alfaro of Ecuador.
