Mohamed al-Badry, the Egyptian ambassador to Moscow, unveiled a statue of the Egyptian thinker and writer Abbas Mahmoud al-Akkad on Thursday at the Russian Research University, coinciding with the 125th anniversary of his birth.
The statue was made by Osama al-Soroury, head of the Egyptian Cultural Office in Moscow.
Badry praised Akkad as an intellectual and moral value that created a beautiful balance between thought, literature and language. He also reiterated the importance of the cultural relations between Egypt and Russia that bring the people of both countries closer to each other.
Akkad was born in Aswan on 28 June 1889 to a mother of Kurdish origin. His books were translated into Persian, Urdu, Malay, German, French and Russian.
The Al-Azhar University called one of its halls after him, and a street in Nasr City is named after him as well.
