In a press conference on Wednesday evening, high elections committee (HEC) head Abdel Moez Ibrahim said the HEC would announce the results of run-offs from the first round of Egypt's parliamentary elections soon.
Abdel Moez told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the HEC would also announce the candidates for the second round of elections, saying the HEC would “avoid the mistakes that marred the first round.”
Head of the HEC’s Technical Committee Yousry Abdel Karim said it was not the HEC’s job to investigate suspicions of illegal funding for campaigns and that the Court of Appeals chief justice would look into the matter.
He went on to say that there are legal limits on campaign spending, and any complaints verified by the public prosecution are forwarded to the Administrative Court, which may decide to disqualify the candidate.
He pointed out that the period during which campaigning must stop is only 48 hours in the first round, and 24 hours in the second. In an appeal to all parties to abide by the rule, he said the period is one of “the shortest in the world” for mandatory non-campaigning.
Abdel Karim described the current elections as “the first democratic elections in Egypt.”
