Eleven army soldiers were killed when a roadside IED exploded at the Sheikh Zuwayed-Rafah highway in North Sinai.
Hesham Darwish, head of the police investigation unit in North Sinai, said the soldiers' armoured vehicle was targeted by an IED, adding that the driver and another soldier were wounded.
Darwish said the attack was similar in nature to the scene where 25 Central Security Forces officers were killed in August 2013.
Since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsy in July 2013, Egyptain security forces have been battling with terrorist groups that expanded their presence in the Sinai Peninsula and led several bloody attacks against army and police personnel, leaving dozens of recruits and officers dead.
