Rights group accuses security forces of kidnapping, threatening activists

An Egypt-based human rights group says security authorities are terrorizing activists with death threats and kidnappings as part of a coordinated campaign to intimidate them.

The Arab Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) said in a statement Tuesday that activists reported receiving threatening calls.

ANHRI also accused security forces of detaining and torturing Dr. Ahmed Hussein, a member of the Doctors without Rights movement and the Doctors Syndicate board, on 18 December.

Hussein, who often documents protester injuries and deaths, was released with warnings that his kidnappers would kill him if he continues his work with revolutionaries.

"Unknown security authorities use the same policies of the dissolved State Security [Investigation] Services to terrify activists,” ANHRI said in its statement.

Activist Asmaa Ali, wife of lawyer Malek Adly, received a phone call Monday from someone threatening to kill her if she does not stop criticizing the military, according to the network.

Lawyer Amr Imam, who works with the movement against military trials for civilians, says he was followed when he left the Zeinhom morgue.
