The Egyptian National Human Rights Council (NHRC) on Wednesday called for criminal trials for suspects who attacked a church in Atfeeh and cut off a Copt’s ear in Qena.
In its meeting, Council Vice President Moqbel Shaker said the council also discussed how to frame the principle of a secular state.
Certain council members said the council is not allowed to hold meetings, as all members had tendered their resignations. However, Shaker said the resignations were rejected by the Supreme Council of Armed Forces.
Commenting on the council’s fact-finding committee, which held ousted President Hosni Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly criminally responsible for shooting the demonstrators, Shaker said the committee only reported facts and testimonies of eyewitnesses.
“We did not charge Mubarak or anyone else,” he said. “The only body that can do that is the public prosecution.”
