Rights activist back to Cairo after 3 years abroad

Sociology professor and political activist Saad Eddin Ibrahim is scheduled to arrive in Cairo on Wednesday after spending three years abroad.

According to his brother, Ahmed, Ibrahim hopes to determine whether he can return to Egypt on a permanent basis or whether authorities will continue to threaten him with arrest.

“My brother will only stay for two weeks this time to see relatives and friends,” he said. “But we still fear his possible arrest by security services, especially given that there are outstanding lawsuits filed against him by certain people.”

“If he is arrested again, we will expect the media to rock the boat,” his brother added.

An Egyptian court sentenced Ibrahim to two years in prison in 2008 on charges of “defaming” Egypt, after which he departed the country.
