The Union of Revolutionary Youth called for celebrating Labor Day in Tahrir Square on 1 May. They suggested that festivities be held from 3 pm to 8 pm and urged workers, labor leaders, heads of independent trade unions, artists, poets and public figures to participate in the celebration.
In a statement published Saturday, the union highlighted the key role played by Egyptian labor in the 25 January revolution when they announced a general strike before former President Hosni Mubarak stepped down.
Emphasizing that the revolution’s motto was “Change, freedom and social justice”, the union also said social and economic demands, along with demands for democratic transformation, represent a priority.
The union called for certain demands to be met, including the creation of a minimum wage no lower than LE1200 and the establishment of an unemployment fund.
It also called for the freedom to form syndicates and unions, and for more comprehensive social and medical insurance systems.
The union said that corrupt management teams left over from the ousted regime should be removed.
