Revolutionary groups call for demonstration condemning Abbasseya violence

Youth and revolutionary movements have called for million-strong demonstrations on Friday in Tahrir Square, Alexandria, Suez and Ismailia under the slogan of “Revolutionary Legitimacy” in protest against the attacks on demonstrators in the Abbasseya district on Saturday.

They said the security services had been sluggish in dealing with the clashes.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Selmy called on demonstrators not to tarnish the “magnificent” image of the 25 January revolution with other “haphazard” demonstrations.

Demonstrators in Tahrir Square called the clashes in Abbasseya “The Second Battle of the Camel” and demanded that the military council investigate the incident.

They also said the council was “passively impartial” by failing to intervene in the incident, making it an accomplice of the assailants.

According to a health ministry statement, the clashes on Saturday night left 308 civilians and 13 soldiers injured. They also resulted in the burning of several cars.

Military Police Commander Hamdi Badin said the army had been protecting the demonstrators in Abbasseya Square, but they were attacked when they left the square to march towards the military council.
