Rescuers put out fire at downtown Cairo mall

Firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out Sunday at Talaat Harb Shopping Center in downtown Cairo.

Al-Ahram news portal said 12 shops burned down, causing huge financial losses. No injuries were reported.

Eight fire engines helped put out the fire, which started on the third floor before spreading to the fourth and fifth floors.

Clothing sold by shops in the building caused the fire to spread quickly, and the mall’s workers were unable to put it out, Al-Ahram said.

The website cited Ahmed Wahba, spokesperson the Civil Defense Forces in Cairo, as saying an electrical short circuit likely caused the fire.
