Reports conflict over voter turnout figures

The head of the High Elections Commission (HEC), Sayyid Abdel Aziz Omar, said voter participation rates registered at 25 percent for Sunday's parliamentary elections, two percentage points higher than the turnout figures in 2005.

Independent reports, however, suggest turnout rates did not exceed ten percent.

Egypt has 41 million registered voters.

The HEC has started receiving results from several districts but vote counting continues, according to Aziz Omar. The final slate of winners is in preparation, in addition to a list of candidates set for 5 December runoff votes, he added.

Omar emphasized the lack of complaints over candidacy withdrawals and prevented access to polling stations

"Be quiet so the runoff will fare well with no violence," Omar urged Egyptians. "We have to be civilized."
