Egyptian reporter Salma El-Wardany arrived in Egypt late Tuesday, returning from Sudan after briefly being detained there while covering student protests against government austerity measures.
German news agency DPA quoted sources from Cairo International Airport who said Wardany, a reporter for Bloomberg news agency, had arrived on a flight from Khartoum. Relatives and friends met her at the airport.
Her sister, Lina, earlier wrote on her Twitter account that Sudanese security had treated Wardany harshly.
Protests erupted last week at the University of Khartoum and in other cities against soaring prices and government austerity measures.
President Omar al-Bashir has dismissed the protests as a work of “few agitators.”
