Report: Pakistani spy agency supports Taliban

Islamabad–A research report says Pakistan’s main spy agency continues to train, fund and arm the Taliban despite intense US pressure to sever ties with the group.

The report issued Sunday by the London School of Economics says interviews with insurgent commanders indicate the agency is even represented on the Afghan Taliban’s main leadership council.

Pakistan denied the claims, but the report could raise tensions between Pakistan and the US, which has provided billions of dollars in military assistance to the country to help fight the Taliban.

Pakistan helped the Taliban rise to power in Afghanistan in the 1990s but publicly renounced the group in response to pressure following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the US.
