A report for the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistic showed that the number of Internet users increased in June 2013 to reach 35.95 million users by 15.9 percent compared to 31.21 million subscribers in June 2012.
The report, issued on the occasion of the World Internet Day, mentioned that Facebook ranked first among websites as its subscribers reached 16.2 million in December 2013 compared to 12.17 million in December 2012, with a rise up to 33.1 percent. It pointed out that the number of Facebook users until 2011 was only 9.39 million. There has been a rise by 72.5 percent in the number of Facebook users between 2011 and 2013, according to the report.
The agency pointed out that it was the responsibility of educational bodies to spread awareness among children and youth to respect others and express their feelings and ideas in a civilized manner on social networking sites.
The statement called on the government to enact laws to protect the users of electronic crimes such as stealing credit card data, tampering with personal information and even crimes of defamation, which spread on social networking dramatically in recent times.
The world has been celebrating the International Day of the Internet on the first Tuesday of the month of February each year since 2005 in more than 90 countries in order to promote a safer use of the Internet and mobile phones, especially among children and young people who are the target group for this day.
This year's celebration comes under the slogan "The responsibilities and duties of Internet users."
