Agriculture Ministry issued on Tuesday its first report classifying governorates that use meat unfit for human consumption, in which Cairo was ranked as the greatest offender.
3,373 violations were reported from from January to December 2013.
The report classified the governorates among four categories to governorates of highest violations, then medium then few then free of violations.
Cairo had one third of the violations. Official sources from the ministry said it had been agreed among ministries of agriculture, local development, food supply, trade and industry to intensify monitoring on meat stores and factories to limit violations.
An official report by the general authority for veterinary services said the total amount of confiscated meat last year exceeded 670,000 kilograms.
The ministry's report showed that eight governorates ranked the first place (Cairo 30 percent of violations, Beheira 15 percent, Gharbiya 10 percent, Giza 8 percent, Sharqiya 6 percent). Total violations at Alexandria, Damietta and Kafr al-Sheikhare estimated at 2,739 violations. Violations in Cairo reached 1,031.
Nine governorates came from the ninth to 17th place with total of 547 violations. The governorates were Qena, Minya, Qalyubia, Luxor, Daqahliya, Sohag, Menoufia, Fayoum and Assiut representing one percent of violations. Governorates of Ismailia, Suez, Marsa Matrouh, Beni Suef, Port Said, South Sinai, Aswan, New Valley came from the 18th to 25th place with 95 violations. Governorates of Red Sea and North Sinai did not record any violations.
