Report: 2.4 million newspapers sold daily in 2009

The total distribution of general newspapers rose by 7.4 in 2009 compared to the year before, an Egyptian government report showed.

The report, issued on Monday by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), said that a total of 892.1 million copies of general newspapers were distributed locally in 2009, with an average of 2.4 million copies circulating per day.

In 2008, a total of 830.9 newspapers were distributed, an average of 2.3 million copies a day.

A total of 93.6 million copies of Egyptian newspapers were distributed overseas in 2009 with an average of 256,400 copies a day, up from a total of 71 million copies in 2008.

In 2009, a total of 113 newspapers were issued, of which 16 were daily, up from 111 general newspapers in 2008, CAPMAS said in the report, issued to mark World Journalism Day.

In 2008, there were 18 partisan newspapers. That number increased to 19 in 2009.

A total of 384 periodicals were issued in 2009, up 5.2 percent from 2008 in which 365 were issued.

A total of 72 million copies were distributed in 2009, down from 76.8 million in 2008, registering a drop of 6.3 percent.

The total number of periodicals distributed overseas, meanwhile, increased from 8.5 million copies in 2009 to 10.5 million in 2009.
