Red Sea employees spray-paint trees to conceal irrigation blunder

A few meters away from the Red Sea Governorate's office, and in a garden housing a memorial statue, employees at the North Hurghada municipality were seen spray-painting trees green again to cover up for an irrigation blunder that caused them to decay.

The action was meant to make the trees appear healthy during the province’s celebration of its national day last Friday. Employees had apparently mistakenly watered them with petrochemical-contaminated water that had been discharged from a local fuel station.

Officials cut down the trees after the attempts to cover up the error were unveiled on Saturday.

Ali Shawkat, the head of the Hurghada city council, ordered an investigation into the incident
