Railway workers launched an initiative on Wednesday to donate one day’s pay to support the national economy.
The workers had earlier staged protests demanding better work conditions and pay raises.
They called on the Transportation Ministry and railways authority to help them activate their initiative.
Mahmoud Kamel, train driver, said that he along with his colleagues agreed to set up the initiative to shore up the national economy "which is in need for us now more than any time before."
They also pledged to forget about their demands, especially after they recognized the critical situation affecting the economy, stock market, production and tourism.
Meanwhile, Mostafa Qenawi, head of the railways authority, welcomed the initiative, saying he will endorse it, meet with the workers who planned the initiative and write to Minister Atef Abdel Hamid.
