Rafah crossing closed for second day, sources say

Rafah border crossing remained closed on Saturday, sources said, following a series of attacks against security positions in North Sinai in the wake of President Mohamed Morsy's overthrow Wednesday.

Saturday marks the second consecutive day the crossing between Egypt and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip has been closed.

“The border closure will continue on Saturday according to instructions from Cairo,” informed sources told Anadolu news agency without elaborating.

Late on Friday, Palestinian security sources revealed that Egypt had informed Palestinian authorities the border would remain closed through Saturday.

The Palestinian source pointed to attacks on security positions and Arish airport by gunmen in North Sinai on Thursday, which left one soldier dead and others injured, as reasons for the continued border closure.

Egyptian authorities closed the Rafah border crossing on Friday.
