For the second day, residents of the Upper Egyptian city of Qena protested on Saturday to reject the appointment of a former major general as governor for the city.
Major General Emad Mikhail, a Copt who worked as assistant to the Giza security head, was appointed as governor of Qena to succeed Magdi Ayoub, also a Copt.
Eyewitnesses said around 3000 people gathered in front of the governorate’s headquarters and chanted against Mikhail, saying they reject him because he belongs to the police apparatus.
On Thursday the government announced a gubernatorial reshuffle that brought in 18 new governors, but most were from the police or army, thus continuing the pattern that dominated the selection of governors during the rule of ex-president Hosni Mubarak.
