An important road in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Qena was reopened on Wednesday after it had been blocked by residents protesting blackouts.
The road links Qena with the tourist hub Luxor.
Eyewitnesses told Egypt Independent that residents of the city of Qus, 25 km north of Luxor, had gathered to block the road to Luxor for several hours to protest the an ongoing blackout in the villages surrounding the city.
Al-Masry Al-Youm reported that some residents threw stones at police forces. The news website said that Qus’s police chief, Brigadier General Ehab Khalaf, was injured.
But later the residents ended their protest and opened the road.
Egypt has been suffering frequent power cuts over the last few weeks. Many governorates have seen protests against almost daily blackouts, while some activists have called on people to refrain from paying power bills.
