Prime Minister Hesham Qandil met with five nominees for governorships over the past two days in preparation for an imminent reshuffling of several governors, said informed sources from the Cabinet on Thursday.
A source said on Tuesday that the Muslim Brotherhood's Guidance Bureau has proposed a list of 50 new governors, and different sources close to President Mohamed Morsy told Al-Masry Al-Youm that he would appoint eight new governors from the Freedom and Justice Party and five from the Salafi Nour Party.
Around 20 governors are expected to be changed in the anticipated reshuffle, the source said, adding that most of the army generals appointed by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces in August will be removed.
The heads of governorates located on Egypt’s borders as well as those of Sharqiya, Gharbiya, Monufiya, Alexandria, Suez and Cairo are the ones primarily targeted by the shuffle. Most of Upper Egypt's governors will also be removed, the source claimed.
The source said that Qandil is now briefing Morsy on his meetings in preparation for announcing the names of the new governors.
Morsy has asked Qandil and the minister of local development for a report on the performance of the current governors and their adherence to the president's 100-day platform, the source claimed.
A number of governors said they have not been informed of any plans for a reshuffle, however. Aly Abdel Rahman, the governor of Giza, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that he was not contacted by any official on this matter.
In August 2011, 11 new governors and three deputy governors were appointed, and one governor was moved.
