A dispute between the official Public Transport Workers Syndicate and its independent counterpart about staging a general strike escalated on Saturday, as workers at Fom al-Khaleeg Garage began the strike on Saturday in spite of the independent syndicate's assertion that workers had agreed to begin the strike on Sunday.
The official syndicate has denied participating, saying it has formed committees to convince workers not to strike.
Ali Fattouh, president of the independent syndicate, told Al-Masry Al-Youm the strike partially began on Saturday at Fom al-Khaleeg, adding that about 35,000 workers in garages nationwide will begin a general strike on Sunday until authorities meet their demands.
Gebali Mohamed Gebali, head of the General Union for Land Transport, said transport workers' rights are respected, which is why committees have been formed to convince workers not to participate in the strikes.
