Proton Holdings Berhad, a giant Malaysian automobile manufacturer, will dispatch a team of specialists to Cairo in early April to meet representatives of Egypt's auto-parts industry.
The visit is in preparation for a huge project by Proton to manufacture cars in Egypt, said Egypt's Ambassador to Malaysia Salah al-Weseimy on Thursday.
Proton's new production line will start with manufacturing 100,000 cars a year and will grow gradually, Weseimy added. Forty percent of the components will be made in Egypt, according to Weseimy.
He said that Proton aims to benefit from Egypt's strategic location as a gateway to major African markets and surrounding countries.
A delegation from the Malaysian company visited Cairo in February and met with Egyptian officials to discuss investment in Egypt. They also visited a number of automobile production lines.
