The Shalateen International road has been closed for the second consecutive day by al-Ababda and al-Bashareya tribesmen protesting the killing of a tribal member by border guards.
The tribe member was killed Monday near Abu Ramad, south of Shalateen near the border with Sudan.
Protesters staged a sit-in in the middle of the road, blocking traffic in the Red Sea Governorate town. Fights broke out after Armed Forces vehicles loaded with food supplies for border guards were unable to pass.
The sit-in began after the victim's family members broke into the Aswan Military Prosecution headquarters. Local authorities have prevented other roads from being blocked.
Major General Wageeh al-Mamoun said that senior tribe members were negotiating with protesters to reopen the road, but they have so far refused any negotiations unless they Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is present.
Mamoun said Sisi's adviser is headed to the area to help resolve the issue.
