Activists staged a silent vigil in Alexandria before the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier, rejecting the appointment of Osama al-Fouly as governor and Ihab Farouk as his deputy on the grounds that they were members of the National Democractic Party, Egypt's former ruling party.
“Fouly is known for supporting the privatization of Alexandria University and for rigging elections of the Faculty Club,” said activist Fayza Saqr. “The government should avoid remnants of the former regime.”
But Fouly’s supporters praised him on Facebook and called for him to be given a chance to solve the city’s problems.
Fouly, for his part, denied that he was a member of the former ruling party.
“It’s not true, and you can check it out,” he said.
